Welcome to music class!  Mr. Michael is going to teach our Worship Guitar Course for Beginners. Let's get started!

Our Worship Guitar Course is made to walk through step-by-step. Mr. Michael will tell you more.

It's important that your guitar be sized specifically for the student, especially if a child. Let's learn more with Mr. Michael!

The picture on the left, shows a boy trying to play a guitar not suited to his size, compared with the girl on the right holding a correctly sized instrument.

It's important to know the parts of your guitar, and to know how to care for it. Let's join Mr. Michael.

Now that we've picked our guitars, let's learn about the order of the strings!

You might memorize this slogan to remember the order of strings (from the floor up) Even Birds Get Dirty (Also Elephants).

There are several methods for tuning your guitar.

Mr Michael is going to demonstrate how to tune your guitar using the Audible Method, of tuning to itself.

This method is generally used by experienced guitarists.

Now, Mr. Michael is going to show you the Visual Method of tuning with a device.

You may also download a digital Guitar Tuner from your App Store. You want one for the Baritone Uke or a Standard Guitar Tuner.

The important thing is that you keep your guitar tuned at all times.

Note: If you have a new guitar, or new strings, it will need tuned every time you pick it up, but eventually the strings will stretch and will hold it's tune better.

As with any musical instrument, Posture and Position is important to get the sound and quality from your instrument, and to not get tired easily. We recommend that beginner students sit until you have your instrument mastered.

Younger students might enjoy sitting crisscross applesauce on the floor with the curved underpart of your guitar resting on your right thigh as shown on the picture below.

When seated on a stool, rest the curved under part of your guitar on your right leg.

If you want to cross your legs while seated, cross your right leg over your left leg and let the underpart of your guitar rest on your right leg.

The pic is a small item, usually made of plastic, that you use to strike the guitar strings. Mr. Michael will share how to hold it to get a pretty sound from your guitar.

Mr. Michael demonstrates the arm movement that's best to use when you strum your guitar.

In addition to the strum charts, there are at least three other forms of music. Mr. Michael will tell you more, then study the differences between the three forms of Joyful Joyful shown below.

Grand Staff Example: Music written on the Grand Staff in it's basic form is performed "as written". A person who is trained to perform this form of music is referred to as a classically trained pianist.

Improvisation can be performed to this form of music when appropriate.  Later Modules of Worship Piano  will study improvisation to Grand Staff music, like from a hymnal or praise chorus sheet.

Before you panic about the different forms of music, Mr. Michael Riggs of Perfect Praise, Inc. will share his experience about 'breaking away' from what is written in the music, along with encouragement for you to begin this journey into musical freedom!

Our Worship Courses will totally change how you view music.

Now, that your guitar is tuned, you have your pic and know how to hold it, let's practice strumming all the strings gently and slowly from the top down, just as Mr. Michael demonstrated.

Below is a Full Guitar Strum Chart. The slashes represent strumming one beat. If you are practicing with a metronome, set it at 60 (60 ticks per minute). Try to strum once with each tick.
